What has CSE been up in October?

Reports: Realising Protection for Human Rights Defenders & CSOs in Europe

Civil Society Europe and the European Civic Forum, leading an informal coalition of civil society organisations, launched the Mapping paper and the Pathways paper for a Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Europe. 

The papers aim to map the existing protection landscape and propose ways to build a stronger ecosystem for the protection of HRDs and CSOs.

Meeting with the OHCHR on the Rule of Law

On 2 October, Civil Society Europe and the the Human Rights and Democracy Network met with Ahreum Lee, Policy Officer at the EU office of the OHCHR –UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The meeting discussed the EU Rule of Law cycle and the role the UN can play in it. The gathering was a welcome beginning for a fruitful collaboration with the UN Office.

CSE’s statement on the proposal for a Civil Society Platform

Civil Society Europe welcomes the European Commission’s proposal to establish a ‘Civil Society Platform to support more systematic civil dialogue’, as stated in the mission letter to the Commissioner-designate for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law Michael McGrath—which positively reflects the collective call for dedicated mechanisms to foster civil dialogue,  championed by the ‘Civil Society for EU’ campaign. CSE has the representativeness and expertise to play a key role in the Platform, and is ready to lead in coordinating such efforts inside independent civil society.

Q&A: the Directive on third-country interest representation

Civil Society Europe, together with other civil society organisations, published a Q&A document to answer key questions about the scope of the proposed Directive on third-country interest representation. The document covers the Directive’s implications for foreign interference in Europe; foreign interest representation legislation outside of the EU; disinformation, media and social media; civic space; and research and academic freedom.

EESC Liaison Group: 20th-anniversary event

In 2004, the EESC Liaison Group with European civil society organisations and networks held its constitutive meeting. This laid the foundation for the first-ever forum for regular dialogue between an EU institution and external civil society networks. 20 years on, the Liaison Group stands strong as a reliable and trusted partner, offering consistent value and expertise to the EESC. Join them on 11 December to celebrate their  journey.

Philea & ECNL: ‘Unpacking the EU AML/CFT Package: Implications for non-profits’

On 12 November, Philea and the European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL) will organise a webinar to introduce you to the scope and content of the new Anti-Money Launder / Countering the Financing of Terrorism package and explore (potential) implications, as well as opportunities for advocacy to minimise negative effects.

DG JUST: CERV communication campaign 

The European Commission launched a communication campaign to promote the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme. The campaign aims to raise awareness among citizens, organizations, and public authorities about the CERV programme and its goals, how it can benefit them and how it addresses critical issues like equality, rights, and democratic values, which are fundamental to the well-being of European societies.
